Easter Pilgrim in Vung Tau: Climb the Statue of the Christ the King

Back in the Philippines, the annual height of the holy week would be at a minimum a 4-day holiday to give way to the spiritual celebration leading to Easter. As a working expat in Ho Chi Minh City, I don’t have that chance. I still work on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

I still find myself in a good position as there are several Catholic churches in the city. It had given me the chance to hear the mass last Holy Thursday, remembering the washing of the feet of the apostles, at Notredame Cathedral held at 5:30pm.

The Holy Thursday and Good Friday are strict no-meat days. For most Filipinos, it only meant not eating pork, chicken and beef. But since I have worked in Saigon, I have followed the Buddhist tradition of veggie days as synonymous to no-meat days. Veggie days exclude fish, seafood, pork, chicken and beef. And it was not difficult. Somehow, it gave me an excuse not to cook, instead make different kinds of garden salad using the local fruits and vegetables available here with my favorite Kewpie (roasted sesame) dressing. kewpie.jpg I am not sure if it was really a sacrifice because I enjoyed the salad I prepared with lettuce, tofu, slices of mango, tomato, cucumber and raisin. On a few occasions I added the Filipino Eden cheddar cheese.

I know back home my family would have at the very least an Easter lunch celebration. So I don’t want to feel so nostalgic as my family and I are all practical persons. I looked at the web, what to do and where to go. Then I remember and saw, there is the Giant Christ the King statue in Vung Tau, its arms stretching atop a hill. I decided to make a “go” to a self-retreat and Easter pilgrim to  this place.

Here is my short Pilgrim stint:

Friday: Booked a limousine via Hoa Mai. I was assisted by an office mate.

Hoa Mai Limousine Services: HCMC to Vung Tau; Vung Tau to HCMC. The earliest trip is 6:00am. The passenger can book by calling their office booking numbers and submitting the mobile number. The passenger is required to arrive at the station 10 minutes before departure time

HCMC 83 Nguyen Thai Binh St. District 1
Price: 140.000 VND for the Limousine. The VIP Limousine is at 180.000VND.

Office addresses and booking numbers:

Saturday: Pilgrim Day

Arrived Hoa Mai office at 5:30am. By 5:40am, the office is already open. Other booked passengers like me arrived. The limousine left promptly at 6:00am. It was a rainy, early morning.

I was delighted to have a very comfortable seat. The roads going to Vung Tau were smooth and there were well-landscape islands between the highways. Seeing plants at the middle of the highway is very Asian I think.

Arrived at the destination: Christ the King of Vung Tau. Mount Nho in Vũng Tàu, Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu Province, Đông Nam Bộ, Vietnam

This maybe a rest area for some, but also a prayer area. Catholics would recognize that.

As one starts ascending the tiled, wide stairs, she finds a rest or I would say, a prayer area. There are statues of Moses carrying the tablets of the ten commandments, the images of the 12 disciples and others. As she sits on any of the cemented benches, looking into the sky, the view of the sea and even with the sprawling city, there is serenity in the atmosphere. She welcomes such solace touching the mind, touching the heart, and touching the soul.

The 811 step is a marker that you have reached the foot of the statue.

Reaching the foot of the statue is about 811 as the marker indicates. There will be around 40 steps more to reach the viewing area of the statue, the shoulder of the Giant Christ.

It is advisable to wear and be conscious of the following:

  1. From the entrance to the top of the statue, sleeveless shirts, sandos/undershirts, revealing clothes, muscle shirts, short pants, short skirts are not allowed.
  2. The owners courteously demand respect as this is a sacred place. Guidelines are found in Vietnamese and English.
  3. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
  4. Don’t throw the litter anywhere. There are trash bins in the area.
  5. There are no entrance fees. There are a few donation boxes along the path of the stairs.
  6. One has to leave her bag and shoes at the foot of the statue if she wants to go up. There is a custodian. It is safe to leave the bag and shoes. Camera or smartphones are allowed to be brought inside.
  7. Everyone is again reminded to observe courtesy and maintaining a soft voice inside as this is a “sacred place”.
  8. Inside, the place is clean and decorated with religious frames hanged on the walls.
  9. The statue closes from 11:30am-1:30pm. Break time is observed in the whole of Viet Nam so one should respect that.
  10. The place opens at 7:30am and closes at 5:00pm. Late guests are encouraged to finish their visits before closing time.

Places of Worship in HCMC

Here are some information about the places of worship in HCMC.

While the dominant religion is Buddhism, Christians, Catholics, Hinduism and Islam exist in the whole of Vietnam. Many places of worship have been around for many years, some over a hundred years. The Vietnamese just like other nations, take their faith seriously. So if a visitor or a tourist is not permitted in a place of worship, it must be for a good reason — 1. praying time is over 2. the visitor is not dressed to be respectful of the faith 3. the visitor only intends to take photos 3. the visitor is eating.

Christmas and New Year outside Saigon

So many blessings I need to thank for this year. I have a job that fulfills me here in Saigon, kind and friendly colleagues and warm neighbors. But my family back home looks forward to include me in the Christmas celebration in the Philippines. My boss was very considerate to allow me to have this holiday vacation.

So I will tell about the fun exploits I had with my family and friends in the Philippines.

Upon my arrival, thanks to Cebupacific, I had the chance to arrive early in Manila to have the longganisa breakfast I long in Jollibee. It was complete with the Spanish hot chocolate and the pineapple juice.

Airbnb had been a solution provider to people who would want to get a decent place with the atmosphere of a home but on a budget. I booked a house with a big garden and a view of the Taal Lake. It was for Christmas eve. It allowed us to have access to the main road and the big shops but enjoy the serenity and the breeze of Tagaytay in this area. There was a big grilling equipment and it helped a lot in grilling the spareribs, yellow fin tuna and tilapia.  I had the chance to prepare a hot pot and grilled (lean ground beef) bo la lot , the Vietnamese style while my uncle prepared the sticky rice and the miki bijon I requested. Of course Filipino Christmas dinner is not complete without the mechado, the hamon de bola and the quezo de bola. This was complemented by yema cake and chocolate cake and fruit tarts that are special in Tagaytay.

Our loving grannies

Our Christmas eve this time did not have lavished dishes and huge noise but we felt a lot of delight being together, singing, dining and exchanging gifts in our Santa hats. Our old folks had a great time too.

The marker shows the location of the garden view house and the Our Lady of Lourdes Church where we heard the Christmas day mass.

Airbnb had helped us too in finding a very pleasant space in Baguio City in the Cordillera region in New Year. We got a spacious apartment with two big bedrooms with verandas, a dining area and a parking space at San Luis, Baguio.

The view from the apartment in San Luis Baguio

baguio-2016

The map shows the places (with markers) we visited this end of 2016. San Luis is the area where we stayed.

Highlights of the places we visited.

Baguio City Public Market . I would say still it is one of the “Best Market in the World”. It has high quality products, clean market, complete and the sellers are friendly. The market has weighing scales around so you can even check the weight of the goods you bought.

The Baguio City Public Market

BenCab Museum. It is a private art haven in the heart of Baguio. It was a personal project and owned by national artist Ben Cabrera. It is an amazing place and slope of art museum and park in itself. Any visitor even without knowledge of aesthetics will find a piece that will awaken one’s thinking of what art is .

There is a minimal entry fee of P120 pesos. Taking photos is allowed except the use of flash.

The Bencab Museum

Burnham Park. No visit to Baguio is complete without passing by the Burnham Park. I call it the Children’s Park. But even the older folks love it there– bike around, walk and jog around, lie under the tree, have a palm reading or a massage on the grass, do aerobics or even simply sit down and have a strawberry taho.

The Burnham Park of Baguio City

Westpoint Shooting Range. It is a privately owned shooting range along Marcos Highway. It is easy to find as there are markers around and the place has a mini garden too.

The Westpoint Shooting Range

Villa Cordillera is a restaurant with a small hotel that serves breakfast adjacent to the Baguio Country Club. It is easily reached through Outlook Drive and has a golf view of the country club. It also famous for their raisin breads. If you wish to get hold of their raisin breads, you have to go there very early. Deliver of the bread is from 6:00am-6:30pm.

They serve ala carte continental breakfast. When we went there last Dec 31st, they serve buffet breakfast at Php 170.00. It includes fruits, omelettes, raisin bread, rice and Filipino bacon, sausage and tuyo. Coffee is also included. It is recommended to come early.

Villa Cordillera

That’s it. This was a very different Christmas and New Year escapade. Spending time with my family is already a big present. Being with my family in Tagaytay City and Baguio altogether was a triple blessing. Cheers to 2017!

The Ao Dai Exhibition in Nguyen Hue

The áo dài as the Vietnamese national costume has a long history. The Vietnamese extends great respect to this national costume that it is worn on various occasions such as Teachers’ Day, Independence day, weddings, Vietnamese Women’s Day. Students are required to wear the áo dài in the schools once a week. In the government offices and banks, staff also wear the áo dài.

In the heart of Ho Chi Minh City in District 1, Saigon House at 77 Nguyen Hue, showcases a small collection of the áo dài from its old design to the 1930s and up to the present. The changes and influences of the times would be evident in the exhibit. A variety of donations from artists are also housed here. The Saigon House is an interesting site to visit. Entrance fee is 50,000Vnd.

I recommend tourists to pay a visit in this small museum. The staff also speak English and they take time to explain the collection. The selected pieces are meaningful expression of the Vietnamese love for their culture and traditions.

Vũng Tàu City: a city by the beach

Vũng Tàu is a commercial and industrial city south of Vietnam. It is 125kilometers from Ho chi Minh City. During weekend and summer time it is a popular destination for locals and tourists as it has a beautiful beach and boating scene.

It used to be a significant port before and during the French colonial period in the 19th century. The Portugese who passed by Vũng Tàu first named it Santiago Ship Bay. The French later labeled it as Cap Saint Jacques to mean Cape St. James. At present, it is called Mũi Nghinh Phong (literally means “Cape of greeting the wind”).

Late 19th century when the whole province was made an autonomous region. In 1979, the town of Vũng Tàu became the capital of the Vũng Tàu Province. In 1991, Vũng Tàu town became a city. (Source: http://wikitravel.org/en/Vung_Tau )

Having the chance to visit Vũng Tàu for a few days had been a nice work and weekend escapade. I was able to see a little, experience the fusion of urban work (as we served as organizer of an international event)  just a street across the beach.

Every afternoon of the three days,  I had the chance to walk along the cemented bay area, had nice seafood dinners with the delegates in popular restaurants and just be mesmerized by the sight of local fishermen pulling their round boats under the sunset and get to experience a pleasant sea breeze.

Try a Vietnamese northern dish in HCM City

Vietnamese restaurants vary. They could be very cheap but sometimes not having a pleasant surroundings or they could be very very expensive with a wonderful and marvelous ethnic setting.

With some friends visiting Ho Chi Minh City every now and then, I tried asking and reading for some good local restaurants with very good local dishes but affordable at the same time. I recently discovered this place.

Bún Chả 145

Address: 145 Bùi Viện, Hồ Chí Minh, phường Phạm Ngũ Lão Ho Chi Minh City

Phone: 08 3837 3474

I have read this place somewhere in the internet but there had been varying opinions. With an intern from Portland coming to my office, I had the chance to invite her and another office mate for a dinner in this place, Bún Chả 145. The place is small but easy to find in the busy backpacker area of Buu Vien St. in District 1. Buu Vien is known for a very active, fun drinking night life.

What is Bún chả ? Bún chả is a Vietnamese dish of grilled pork and noodle, which is thought to have originated from Hanoi, Vietnam. Bun cha is served with grilled fatty pork over a plate of white rice noodle and herbs with a side dish of dipping sauce. Wikipedia

We arrived early in the restaurant and we had a surprise. More than the practical prices– the place was neat and the food was very good from the bún chả, to the meat rolls and the fruit dessert. Of course the dinner would not be complete with a cold Bia Saigon. Each one of us had a bún chả, we shared two sets of rolls, two sets of fruit desserts and had a round of Bia. Our bill was only 300,000 VnDong.

More Coffee Shops and more hangouts

Hangout is a place a person would frequently go to because of its atmosphere. It may be a place for meeting friends, spending a pastime like reading a book or just having a good dish and drink after a full day. Here is to share three different coffee shops that have become my hangout while in Saigon.

The Loft Cafe

Address: 26 Lý Tự Trọng, Bến Nghé, Hồ Chí Minh

Phone: 08 6682 5082

The Loft Cafe is at the 1st level of the century old Art gallery building at the corner of Dong Khoi and Ly Tu Trong streets in District 1. The coffee shop is open as early as 7:00am and closes at 10:00pm. They serve a wide variety of meals–from Vietnamese to continental breakfast, local noodles and ala carte meals for lunch, sandwiches, cocktails coffee and mocktails, simple and specialty ice cream such as duriccini, chocomando and peppacado and a good line up of appetizers.

I come here because the ambiance is very peaceful. But mind you, this could be filled up during lunch time on workdays. I have tried their salmon which is great, lunch meal, golden noodles and even the bruschetto. The staff are also very attentive to the diners’ needs.

This is a good place to visit to have a relaxing personal time and a sumptuous dinner after a hard day of work.

Caffe Bene

Address: 58 Đồng Khởi, Bến Nghé, Quận 1, Ho Chi Minh City
Phone: 08 3925 7788
Caffe Bene is an Italian named and themed coffee shop but is a fusion of Vietnamese coffee, Italian and American coffee, nice fruit smoothies and juices, and of course famous for their Korean bing-su. It has a very spacious ground and first floor areas. The second floor has bookshelf walls with many reading materials in Vietnamese for the young and the old.
The place also possesses a serene ambiance suited for both formal and informal meeting of friends and acquaintances. The coffee and the smoothies are a bit pricey but it is a good place for reading or studying. It is like every corner is a small private space. I don’t mind passing a weekend afternoon time to read my book in this place. I will come back.

Cafe Com Hen Nho

Address: 382/22 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, Phường 5, Quan 3, Hồ Chí Minh City, 700000

Phone:08 6681 9107

Cafe Com Hen Nho is a coffee shop gem situated perpendicularly between Vo Van tan St. and Nguyen Thi Min Khai in District 3. It has two levels with well chosen wooden chairs and antique frames. They serve local coffee, ice cream and desserts too. There is an acoustic music band on Saturdays but I usually come here on week nights.
The place has a personality of antiquity but still a source of modern coffee ambiance pleasures. As a hangout, it has been a refuge for my Vietnamese friend and myself to go here for an end-of-work chat, rumblings and consolations.

Summer Escapade: Go to La Gi, Binh Thuan

The summer heat is here now in Ho Chi Minh City. Nobody can deny it, we are now experiencing 36degrees C in the middle of the day. The wind is warm and the chill breeze has gone even in the early morning or the early evening. With this kind of weather it will be a very good time to get out of the city to reach some natural pools or go to the beach.

This month also marks two holidays: the Hung Kings Festival (April 17) and the Reunification Day (April 30). Both occasions give the citizens and the workforce in Vietnam public holidays. Hence it is the ideal to truly have a special time for personal leisure.

So this post recommends La Gi, Binh Thuan as the destination, more than 3hour-drive from Ho Chi Minh City. But why La Gi? Here are nine good reasons.

Screen Shot 2016-04-20 at 7.46.17 PM

9. During the three-hour drive, you get the chance to see interesting aspects of the province– the rice paddies, the salt fields and the beautiful sand dunes. Here is a salt field I saw on the way.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

8. As your interests get high on the varying colours of green, gray, white and caramel, you get to see all these big cactus like looking plants with thorny long leaves. There are so many of them in big farms, the dragonfruit farms. Beautiful!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

7. You and your group or family may also opt to pass by the famous Thay Thim Palace to pay respect to the rich harvests that this town is able to produce.

The Thay Thim Palace and Ta Cu cable car photos were taken from the web, not included from my personal camera.

6. Next is the visit to the Ta Cu Mountain  (Cáp Treo núi Tà Kú, Bình Thuận) to find the big white sleeping Buddha. How to go there? Through a cable car service that costs only 120,000Vn dong going up and going down.

IMG_5944

The photo of the sleeping Buddha is from the camera of người bạn (friend) Trang.

5. Another contender when it comes to having a magnificent site is the Ke Ga in Hàm Thuận Nam District, also in Binh Thuan. The Ke Ga refers to the rock formations in this islet that has the shape of the head of a chicken. The huge rock formations seemed like a fortress protecting the island. The waters around the area are very clear.

The lighthouse is situated in the center, still operating to provide signals and warnings to boatmen. The lighthouse is surrounded by beautiful plumeria trees.

4. The summer escapade will not be complete without a short visit to the seafood market to get the best and most fresh crabs, fish, squids and octopus and seashells. One good option is to buy the seafood and have it cooked by the local mobile restaurants. They are called mobile restaurants as their services appear only at night with the small chairs and tables. They make very good grilling of the seafood you have. I discovered these seashells, very juicy. It is recommended to enjoy these without the different seasonings commonly poured into them. Enjoy these with just the onion leaves.

IMG_20160416_202546

3. Mom Da Chim (Lazi Beach Resort) is one of the beach resorts in Lagi. It is not new but it has a spacious place with bungalow type rooms and the regular hotel rooms with comfortable balconies. Food and drinks are at reasonable prices too.

Screen Shot 2016-04-20 at 9.25.26 PM

The Mom Da Chim has a very pleasant beachfront with hammocks and beach benches. The resort has a large swimming pool. The resort serves the traditional Vietnamese feast meals and fresh seafoods as well.

Buffet breakfast is also available with the promising fresh fruits and local puddings. I had tried the sumptuous local dry noodles with the round soft banh (rolls) and the banana pudding blended with small strips of jackfruit. I had matched my breakfast with fresh orange juice and the traditional hot cà phê sữa đá and it was a divine breakfast.

2. The La Gi shoreline is one of the widest I have encountered in many of my beach quests. The shoreline would encourage many beach activities as it has a beautiful fine golden sand. Beach volleyball, frisbee, tug-of-war or even night camping are all possible.

1. Finally, the top reason to go to La Gi is the amazing beach with the playful, candid strong summer waves. I call these summer waves as these waves are not yet spoiled by the rainy season. The summer waves could be high and quick which makes it more exciting to play and jump with it. The waters are clean and the bottom of the water is pretty much visible in the early morning.

This beautiful place has reminded me of my childhood summers in the Philippines when we would walk for almost two kilometers everyday to reach the beach.

All my colleagues, 11 of us including myself, had a fantastic time in this beach.

So there you are, do not wait anymore. Plan your next holiday to La Gi, Binh Thuan. It is worth the trip.

The Hung Kings Festival

The Hung Kings Commemoration and Festival is celebrated on the 10th day of the third lunar month. It was in 2007 when the government declared that a day for the Hung Kings will be one of the public holidays. Officially, the holiday is called Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương.

According to the famous legend, Vietnamese people are the descendants of Lac Long Quan and Au Co and the eldest child is Hung, later to become the leader, the chieftain, the ruler of the Văn Lang/ Âu Lac clans. There are other kings that followed and they are considered as the forefathers of Vietnam.

Vietnam as a nation has always embraced a strong sense of history, a tradition and value most ASEAN nations could learn from. Such love for history can be seen on how the nation thrives to preserve the architectural sites, preserve history through beautiful story paintings, ceramic artworks and most of all, remembering and honoring martyrs, heroes and significant events in the history of Vietnam.

Slide1

My friend Thơ is in the photo.

I had the chance to join our training center to honor and remember the story of the Hung Kings. We went to the Hung Kings Memorial Temple in District 9, lighted incense sticks and made humble offerings. The place is huge, carefully designed and the beautiful historical artwork made of ceramic tiles are in placed to exhibit the life of the Vietnamese back in 2879. (Wikipedia, 2016, Hung Kings)
